Kong is a Dutch progressive metal band from Amsterdam , which was founded in 1988, dissolved in 2000 and re-formed in 2007.

history

The band was founded in 1988 by Dirk DeVries (electric guitar, sampling), Aldo Sprenger (electric guitar), Mark Drillich (electric bass) and drummer Rob Smits. Together they developed the first songs and reached a contract with Peaceville Records and in 1990 released their debut album Mute Poet Vocalizer on this label . In addition, she has already played her first concerts, including in Melkweg . Once released, they began touring across Europe . In 1992 and 1995 two more albums followed with Phlegm and Push Comes to Shove . Then Sprenger and Smits left the band and were replaced by guitarist Marieke Verdonk and drummer Rob Snijders. After the band had reached a contract with Roadrunner Records , the album EARMINeD was released in 1997 . At this time Snijders left the band to join Celestial Season . He was replaced by Klaas Broekema, who was then also heard on the 1999 Freakcontrol . In the following year, the band members decided to break up the group for the time being so that they could devote themselves to other things. During this hiatus, Peaceville Records released the best-of compilation 88 • 95 in 2001 .

In 2007 bassist Mark Drillich decided to re-establish the band. Tijs Keverkamp joined the line-up as the new guitarist, followed a few months later by drummer Mandy Hopman. Together they worked on new material resulting in a three-song demo that was released in early 2008 on MySpace . A few months later, guitarist David Kox completed the line-up. In August 2008, the recording of a new album began in their studio in Amsterdam. The album was produced and mixed by ex-guitarist Dirk DeVries. In March 2009 the album What It Seems Is What You Get was released on their own label Kongenial Records . After the release, the band played on various tours.

style

The band plays quadraphonic progressive metal, with each of the four band members at live concerts on one of the four corners of the stage or, if the space allows, on one side of the room. The songs are all instrumental, with the use of samples and other programmed noises and instruments, such as keyboards , to be heard.
