The Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen (abbreviation: KIT ) ( German  Royal Tropical Institute ), or Tropical Institute for short , is an independent institute in Amsterdam , Netherlands . Until the independence of the Dutch East Indies colony in 1950, it was called the Koloniaal Instituut te Amsterdam .

The institute is internationally active through development projects , scientific research and training.

The Tropical Museum in Amsterdam operated by the Tropical Institute is one of the most important ethnographic museums. The institute also operates a library and a publishing house. The Tropical Theater , which was previously part of the institute, had to close on January 1, 2013 due to subsidy cuts .

Closure of the library

After the subsidies have been cut, the library will also be closed and its collection of more than 900,000 books, maps and documents will be transported to other libraries.
