Consistency theory

Consistency theories deal with aspects of coherence, compatibility or harmony in the relationships between cognitions (which e.g. can be consonant or dissonant), as well as the effects of dissonances as contradictions between different cognitions on behavior , motivation and attitudes , whereby a state of consistency (freedom from contradictions) is sought as the target state. Originally, these ideas were developed within Gestalt psychology , which assumes the pursuit of a harmonious, coherent, self-contained whole as a central development principle.

Important representatives of consistency theories are:
