Context (IT environment)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Context in the IT environment means any type of information that can be used to characterize the situation of an entity in interaction with other entities. Since context depends on the respective interaction, there is no general answer for information whether it is context or not. Context can be a single piece of information or a combination of many pieces of information from different sources or different points in time. Context forms the basis for context-sensitive applications (see Context Sensitivity (Computer Science) ).

An example of this definition of context is a person interacting with their smartphone. The person himself and the smartphone are interacting entities. Context now means any information that influences the interaction between the two entities. Examples of such contextual information could be, for example, the location, people in the vicinity, the time, currently running applications, or even the person and their smartphone. A context-sensitive application could now make use of this data and offer services based on this contextual information.
