Contrast measurement

The contrast measurement determined in the photograph the contrast (= brightness difference) between two or more points of a subject. This is also known as motif contrast .

Applications

In digital photography , contrast measurement in live view is often used to determine the sharpness of the object and thus for focusing .

When working in the darkroom , the contrast between the densest and lightest areas of a negative can also be measured in order to determine the correct gradation of the photo paper.
