Convention of the Holy Spirit
The Convent of the Holy Spirit , also known as Konventhof ( Latvian Konventa sēta ), is a listed building complex in the Latvian capital Riga .
location
It is located in Riga's old town on the north side of Scharrenstrasse ( Skārņu iela ) at Schmiedestrasse ( Kalēju iela ) 9, 11. There is a gate to Scharrenstrasse. Immediately to the east of the gate is the former poor house Eckens Konvent .
Equipment and history
The convent was a German charity and was initially located on the banks of the Daugava . In 1330 it was moved to its current location. Before that, the order castle of the Order of the Brothers of the Sword, destroyed by the Rigans in 1297, was located here . In 1482, councilor Johann Camphusen founded the charitable foundation Campenhausen's Elend , which was rebuilt in 1749 by Lieutenant General Baron von Campenhausen. The convent worked as a poor house . The complex was damaged by fires and rebuilt several times. The convent received its current appearance in the 18th century.
During the time of the Soviet occupation of Latvia in the 20th century, the building complex fell into disrepair. Then in 1996 a renovation took place. Today the buildings house restaurants, galleries and shops as well as a hotel.
Since October 29, 1998, the Convent of the Holy Spirit has been registered as a complex under number 6546 in the Latvian Register of Monuments .
