Monument in place

Kopatschi ( Ukrainian Копачі , Russian Копачи ) is a former place in Ukraine . It is located in the Chernobyl exclusion zone . After the Chernobyl nuclear disaster , it was very heavily contaminated and abandoned. The houses of the residents were torn down as an experiment, which meant that the radioactivity could spread deeper into the ground and further to the cooling pond of the now damaged nuclear power plant to the east of the village. Kopatschi is the only village where the houses were torn down. There is still a former kindergarten (a stone house) and a memorial that commemorates the liberation from German occupation in World War II. At the time of the evacuation, the village had 1,114 inhabitants.
