Head impulse test

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The head impulse test is a method of detection of unilateral or bilateral failure of the organ of equilibrium . It allows the examination of the horizontal semicircular canals at the bedside. The examiner assesses the compensatory saccades that the patient has to make after passive head rotation in order to compensate for the deficit of his vestibulo-ocular reflex . The clinical test is also known as the Halmagyi-Curthoys head impulse test or the Halmagyi maneuver , according to the original descriptions .

The quantitative measurement of the head impulse test can be carried out using magnetic eye coils or video oculography. The use of video systems also allows testing of the vertical semicircular canals and the compensatory saccade pattern.
