Coptic Evangelical Church

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Coptic Evangelical Church of Egypt , also Evangelical Church of Egypt or Synod of the Nile (English Synod of the Nile , Arabic: El-Kanisah El-Injiliyah ), is a Presbyterian or Reformed church.

history

The church goes back to the mission of the American Presbyterian Church (USA) among Muslims and Copts in Egypt in the second half of the 19th century. In 1863 the Evangelical Seminary was founded in Cairo. The missionaries often built schools in the beginning and then worship facilities. The Coptic Evangelical Church of Egypt gained its independence from the American mother church in 1958, while it was able to take over most of the facilities of the mother church in Egypt. Under Nasser's government , numerous church schools were nationalized and some of the church property was confiscated.

meaning

There are currently around 300 congregations with around 300,000 members, making the Coptic Evangelical Church of Egypt the largest Protestant church in the Middle East. She runs the development aid facility CEOSS .

The Coptic Evangelical Church of Egypt is also active outside of Egypt, so it tries to address the Arabic-speaking population there through the Agape Christian Center in London.

The church is a member of the World Council of Churches and the World Reformed Federation .
