At the World Cup, however, a joint team was formed, which consisted of ten South Koreans and eight North Koreans and was trained by the North Korean An Se-Uk . With the formation of this Korean team, Syria was also qualified for the World Cup as third in the Asian Cup.

At the Junior World Cup in Portugal, the Korean team met Argentina , Ireland and the reigning world champion and host Portugal in the preliminary round . With a win against Argentina, a draw against Ireland and a defeat against Portugal, the team reached the quarter-finals, which they lost 5-1 to Brazil . The Brazilian team then reached the final, which they only lost on penalties against Portugal.

After this World Cup, both Korean U-20 national teams played separately again.
