Korn Synagogue

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Korn Synagogue (also called Korn-Shil Synagogue ) in the Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi is one of two active synagogues in the city . Before the Second World War, there were over 60 synagogues and prayer houses in Chernivtsi.

history

The synagogue was built around or shortly before 1900. After the Second World War it was used as an office building for a few years. The building was renovated from 2004 to 2011 and has been operated by the Chabad Jewish community ever since.

architecture

The building stands between ordinary houses and faces the street with its south side. Only this side shows decorative architectural elements. Two pairs of arched windows and a large round window above are framed by pilasters on the side and a semicircle on the top. On the east side there is an extension with stairs. Before the renovation, some of the original doors were bricked up.

The interior consists of the main hall and an anteroom with stairs. Unusually for synagogues, the Torah shrine is not located on the east side of the room, but on the south side. Before the renovation, his place was only recognizable through a deep niche in the wall; the bima was also missing .
