The Lake Kournas ( Greek λίμνη κουρνά ) is the only natural freshwater lake of the Greek island of Crete . It is located in western Crete near the north coast near Georgioupoli . The outflow of the lake flows into the Mediterranean at Georgioupolis . Water turtles , snakes and various types of dragonflies live here . As a leisure offer there is a pedal boat rental .
The water of the lake is alkaline because of the calcareous rock of the Cretan mountains and feels lye to soapy.
