Krakow Gate (Lublin)
The Krakow Gate is located in Lublin in Poland and forms the western entrance to the historic old town of Lublin.
history
The first phase of construction of the Kraków Gate was completed in the 14th century. The lower section of the gate, which is made of limestone and bricks, falls during this period. This part of the building had loopholes and machicolation . In the 16th century the gate was renovated after several fires damaged it. The entrance gate was built in the second or third quarter of the 16th century. In 1611 the moat in front of the gate was leveled and a trading post named Korce was established. During the 17th century the gate was renovated again. With the help of Dominik Merlini , the gate was repaired again in 1778. Due to the ongoing renovations and the limited financial resources of the city, the gate should be demolished in 1830. However, the project received little support and was not implemented. Between 1844 and 1945 there was a gallery with iron grating around the gate. The fire brigade monitored the city from this location. The renovation completed in 1925 was not recognized by the Society for the Protection of Monuments . In 1954, for the 10th anniversary of the People's Republic of Poland , the gate was repaired again. At that time the plaster was renewed, the iron grating of the gallery was removed and the two balconies were restored. The gate was renovated again from 1962 to 1965, as part of the transformation of the gate into a museum. During this renovation, the gate was restored to its Gothic shape and the plaster removed from the four-sided substructure and the entrance gate. Since 1965 the Museum of the History of the City of Lublin has been located in the Krakow Gate.
