Krakenburg

The “Krakenburg” house at the foot of the monastery mountain is reminiscent of the castle today

The Krakenburg was a castle in Wipperfürth on today's Klosterberg in the south of the city. Whose stones were later build a monastery used the Franciscans. The remains of the defensive system , which no longer exists today , were integrated into the city wall.

The date of construction is unknown. After the early departure of the noblemen from Wipperfürth from 1143 onwards, the castle housed a branch of the canons of St. Aposteln in Cologne, who left in 1189.

It is historically mentioned in 1404, when the Cologne Wipperfürth first besieged and then occupied. An archer by the name of Krewell or Krauwer used glowing arrows to set fire to the houses below.

Today an alley and a specialty restaurant called "Krakenburg" remind of the days of knights in Wipperfürth.

Trivia

Krakenburg was also the name of a rock music group that existed in Rosenheim / Upper Bavaria in the early 1980s . The group name was initially created out of pure imagination, at least that's what the founders thought. They were all the more surprised when they found out about 20 years after the breakup of the music group from the Wikipedia article above that the term 'Krakenburg' has a historical basis.
