Crane helicopters are types of helicopters that are equipped to take on external loads and their loading and have the option of improved external load monitoring. The use of helicopters is colloquially referred to as cargo flight .

Machines specially equipped as crane helicopters such as the Sikorsky S-64 and also the Mil Mi-10 have a driver's seat that can be swiveled towards the load in order to be able to observe it particularly well while it is moving. The helicopter is also stabilized by an automatic system (a special autopilot). It then behaves like a rigid platform.

The Kaman K-Max , specially designed for external load transport, is often used to transport tree trunks from inaccessible areas.

Another crane helicopter is the Mil Mi-32 , but it did not go into series production.
