District chambers for peasant matters

District chambers for peasant affairs ( Russian: Уездное по крестьянским делам присутствие ) were supervisory bodies for “peasant self-government” in villages and administrative districts in tsarist Russia . The district chambers were created in 1874 and directed by the aristocratic marshal of the district. The chambers were composed of police officers, justice of the peace and the chairmen of the district semstvo offices . The district chambers for peasant affairs were subordinate to the provincial chambers, headed by the tsarist governors.
