Circular rotor (torpedo)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A so-called circulator is a torpedo with a defective steering system. Its rudder is jammed in one direction, so that the torpedo constantly steers in the given direction. He describes a circular path .

Circulators can become dangerous to the firing boat or hit an allied ship or submarine. If a submarine shoots a torpedo, it can be hit itself. At least three German submarines sank during the Second World War due to circulations. On March 29, 1942 , the British light cruiser HMS Trinidad was hit by a circular while attempting to sink a German destroyer. It is also currently suspected that the famous U-47 under the leadership of Lieutenant Günther Prien was destroyed around March 7, 1941 by one of its own circular torpedo.
