Crepitation ( Latin " crepitatio " for "rattle", "crunch") is a medical name for

  1. the painful, audible and palpable rubbing of fracture parts against each other (as a sure sign of fracture ),
  2. is not necessarily painful, but audible and tactile joint crunch (eg. a snap of tendon, ligament or tissue portions over a bony prominence or a rubbing of the joint partners in advanced osteoarthritis ),
  3. the auscultatory crackling or crackling rattle in the initial and final stages of pneumonia ,
  4. the crunching (also called "snowball crunch" hereinafter) sound on touching ( palpation ) of Hautemphysems .
