The Church of the Exaltation of the Cross , ( Ukrainian Хрестовоздвиженська церква / Chrestowosdwyschenska zerkwa ) is an Orthodox church building of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (Eparchy Kiev) in the Ukrainian capital Kiev .
history
The wooden church built on a stone foundation in the Podil district of Kiev in 1748 had a separate bell tower. It fell victim to the fire in Podil in 1811 . It was then rebuilt in the classical style by the Kiev-based architect Andrei Melenski until 1841 . The interior of the church was designed by the Kiev artist Hryhorij Petrowytsch Switlyzkyj . In 1891 Mikhail Bulgakov was baptized in the Exaltation of the Cross. In 1984 the church was restored.
