It was erected on August 27, 1989 in Aachen as a replacement for a stone crucifixion group that was lost in the turmoil of World War II in 1941 . Your location is on a square between Wirichsbongardstrasse and Schildstrasse, which in 2003 received the official postal address "Henger Herrjotts Fott" in reference to the surrounding district of the same name.
history
In 1792, when Aachen was still a Free Imperial City , a wooden mission cross was erected on today's square , the front of which faced the city center. Around this time , the name "Henger Herjotts Fott", formulated in Öcher Platt , was established for this quarter between Elisenbrunnen , Theaterstrasse and the back of the Kaufhof grounds and the house of the recreation society Aachen, because Aachen's "fine society" is to be found in the local area in front of this cross Kur und zum Spiel met and behind it a residential area of the simple and socially disadvantaged population extended. In 1897 the old wooden cross was replaced by a crucifixion group made of stone. This was removed in 1941 for unknown reasons.
It was not until 1986 that a local community formed the association “Henger Herrjotts Fott e. V. ”and collected donations, a new sculpture was erected three years later, which was made by the famous Aachen sculptor Bonifatius Stirnberg. He called his sculpture "Osen Herjotts Hazz", which means that God has a heart for the poor district. In popular parlance, however, the term "crucifixion group Henger Herjotts Fott" prevailed. A three-day street festival has been organized around this crucifixion sculpture every year since 1986, which is intended to keep alive the memory of the history of the crucifixion group and the citizens' initiative. In addition, a one-sided bronze plaque was created with today's crucifixion group in the middle with the year 1989. All around there was the writing: Bürgergemeinschaft “Henger Herjotts Fott e. V. 1986 Aachen "and engraved under the sculpture" Osen Herjotts Hazz ".
sculpture
The actual sculpture is made entirely of bronze and consists of a four meter high cross on which a life-size figure of Christ with a large crown of thorns is attached. An old woman in a wide robe crouches at the foot of the cross and looks up in awe at the figure of Christ. Another older woman kneels in front of her feet with a wide hooded coat, who has laid her upper body in the crouching woman's lap and whose face cannot be seen under the drooping hood. Her right arm hangs limply and she looks generally depressed and exhausted.
The entire group is ring-shaped in the floor area with a circle of cobblestones, in which lighting fixtures and an oval bronze plaque are embedded. In the center of this is the stone crucifixion group from 1897 and the inscription engraved on the side: “ A missionary cross made of wood was erected here in 1792. This was replaced in 1897 by a crucifixion group in stone, which was removed in the chaos of war in 1941 and was lost. This new crucifixion group was established and inaugurated on August 17, 1989 through the initiative of the Henger Herrjotts Fott community. Created by Bonifatius Stirnberg. "
