Building of the community

The Kreuzkirche is a building of the Evangelical Church of the German Language in Turkey (Alman Protestan kilisesi) in Beyoğlu , a district of Istanbul .

history

In 1843 a German Protestant community was founded in Constantinople . The members were German craftsmen, merchants, Prussian officers in Ottoman services and members of the Prussian embassy. In 1856 she acquired the current property and first built a school and a residential building. In 1861 a church was built on it, which in the following decades received an altarpiece, an organ and a bell. In 1889 the German Emperor Wilhelm II visited the church during his stay in Istanbul. In 1911 the outer walls were reinforced by supporting pillars and a sister's apartment was added.

In 1920 the building was confiscated by the French embassy and only returned to the German community in 1925. In 1944 it was expropriated again. After the return in 1954, renovation work and a comprehensive redesign of the interior took place.

Today around 200 members belong to the community, mostly German employees of companies and schools in Istanbul as well as members of the embassy.
