Cross grinding refers to a type of surface treatment that is particularly common on metal components of internal combustion engines and is achieved using the honing technique .

Cross grinding refers to the grinding pattern and the cross angle resulting from the superposition of rotating and straight movements of the honing tool. A certain cross angle is prescribed depending on the application of the component. The roughness occurring in the cross angle belongs in this context . Both together result in the cross-cut.

Cross grinding is used, for example, in bearings or cylinders of internal combustion engines. A certain roughness of the cylinder wall is desired there so that the lubricating film adheres and does not tear off due to the movement of the piston.
