The war memorial is a memorial to the fallen of the First and Second World Wars in Ajaccio , the capital of the island of Corsica .

The monument is located on the western edge of the old town of Ajaccio, on the southeast side of the Place du Général de Gaulle . A little further to the west is the Monument à Napoléon Ier et ses frères, dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte .

Design and history

It consists of a simple small wall with a plaque on it. In front of the wall there is a chain between posts as a barrier. Behind the wall rise four flagpoles, which are intended for the European flag , the flag of France , the flag of Corsica and a flag with the coat of arms of the city of Ajaccio .

The inscription on the plaque reads:

LA CORSE
A SES ENFANTS
MORTS
POUR LA PATRIE

( German  for example: Corsica, his children who died for the fatherland )
