The decision to erect a monument in honor of Napoleon in Ajaccio was made in August 1854. In 1862 a committee was set up to raise funds for the necessary funds. Jérôme Bonaparte held the presidency in Paris . Ministers in the Napoleon III government were among the first to donate . Designed by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and created by Antoine-Louis Barye between 1862 and 1865 , the monument was inaugurated on May 15, 1865. Your plaster model is kept in the Musée d'Orsay .

Initially, the monument was on the Place du Diamant and faced the Mediterranean . In 1969, on the 200th birthday of Napoleon, it was moved to its current location and has been facing the city ever since. After an attack on the memorial in 1986, the statues were initially put into storage, but later put up again. On December 18, 1986, the monument was classified as a movable monument historique under the number PA2A000017.

Napoleon Bonaparte stands on a broad base as a bronze equestrian statue crowned with a laurel wreath. He is holding a globe in his right hand. The Napoleon statue is surrounded by statues of his brothers Joseph (created by Aime Millet ), Lucien ( Gabriel-Jules Thomas ), Louis ( Jean-Claude Petit ) and Jérôme ( Jacques-Leonard Maillet ).
