history

Memorial plaque for the victims of the Second World War

On June 24, 1923, the war memorial was unveiled in what was then the school garden and was given by the superintendent Dr. Heber consecrated to commemorate the soldiers from Liegau-Augustusbad who died in the First World War. In the course of the following decades the town center was structurally altered several times, which led to the fact that, among other things, the stairs to the memorial and the walls with the granite balls disappeared and ultimately only the memorial stone and the rectangular open space in front of it were left.

On the initiative of the Liegau-Augustusbad Heimatverein, a granite slab was attached to the memorial on April 30, 2005 in order to also commemorate the victims of the Second World War on the memorial. During the official inauguration of the plaque, the names of the Liegauer victims were read out.

In 2013 the entire monument complex was restored as part of the renovation of the town center. In addition to the repair of the memorial and the area in front of the memorial, the historic staircase to the memorial and the walls surrounding the complex including the spherical attachments were rebuilt. At the same time, the staircase to the school, which runs right next to the boundary wall of the monument, was rebuilt.

On November 17, 2013, the day of national mourning , the renovated monument was inaugurated as part of the official Radeberg memorial event. Gabor Kühnapfel, Mayor of Liegau-Augustusbad, Mayor of Radeberg Gerhard Lemm and Frank-Peter Wieth, chairman of the CDU city council, took part in the laying of the wreath.
