The Salisbury War Memorial is a Grade II Listed War Memorial in Salisbury , England . It commemorates the fallen from Salisbury in the First and Second World Wars .

It is in the center of Salisbury just north of the Guildhall on the eastern half of the town's market place.

Design and history

The memorial was erected in 1922 by HH Martyn and Company of Cheltenham . The unveiling took place on February 12, 1922 in a ceremony led by Pastor Addison by Lieutenant Tom Adlam .

The cost was £ 2,500. Portland stone was used as the building material . An arched, curved wall was created with a large bronze sculpture enthroned on its prominent center . The sculpture depicts a lion and military objects such as a helmet, sword, rifle, cannon and victory wreaths. Below the sculpture there are two inscription panels on the north-facing front, above which the city coat of arms of Salisbury is located as a carved relief, which is vaulted by one , is crowned with a marble pediment.

On the upper panel is the English inscription:

IN HONOR
AND REMEMBRANCE
OF THE CITIZENS OF
SALISBURY
WHO SERVED
WHO FOUGHT WHO DIED
FOR FREEDOM HOME
AND HUMANITY
1914-1919.

( German  In honor / and in memory / of the citizens of / Salisbury / who served / who fought, who died / for freedom, homeland / and humanity / 1914-1919. )

After the Second World War, the lower panel was added. Their inscription reads:

FOR YOUR TOMORROW
WE GAVE OUR TODAY
WE HONOR ALL THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES
IN THE SERVICE OF THE COUNTRY IN THE
SECOND WORLD WAR AND ALL CONFLICTS SINCE
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

(German For your tomorrow / we gave our today / we honor all who gave their lives / in the service of the country in / Second World War and all other conflicts since then / we will remember them )

In the north side of the curved wall there are also six bronze plaques with the names of 460 people who died in Salisbury in the First World War.

There is an elaborately designed lantern on each of the outer ends of the wall. To the north and on both sides, the monument is framed by a bronze railing with a central gate. To the side of the monument there is a flower arrangement.

The war memorial has been listed as a memorial since June 8, 2011 and is listed as a building of national importance and special interest in category II of the English list of monuments .
