The war dead were buried scattered around the cemetery grounds during the Second World War and only reburied in the central war cemetery towards the end of the 1960s. The majority of the grave sites are graves of civilian bomb victims from Altona , but also 115 graves of soldiers. In the middle is the high cross. Four grave fields for soldiers are laid out around the Hochkreuz, around which there are additional soldiers' graves. The graves of the approximately 5000 bomb victims are arranged around the outside in the form of a cross. Field XVI contains the graves of 20 concentration camp victims (resistance fighters, homosexuals). Either standing stone crosses or lying grave slabs with two names are used as gravestones. The stones are unadorned except for the symbol of an iron cross and the name of the deceased; dates of birth and death are not given. The names of the dead with dates of birth and death are available on the Internet.
