Crypt
A crypt (from Greek κρυπτός "hidden, hidden") is a medical term that describes an epithelialized depression in the mucous membrane that extends into deeper wall layers. Anatomical examples are:
- Cryptae tonsillares of the palatine and tongue tonsils
 - Cryptae intestinales (Lieberkühn crypts) of the small and large intestine
 - Cryptae anales of the anal canal
 - Rokitansky-Aschoff crypts of the gallbladder
 - Glandulae cervicales uteri of the cervix
