Kuchiba
Kuchiba ( Japanese 朽 葉 , literally "withered leaves") is a brownish shade that is created by mixing gardenia yellow with gray-red. The hue is already mentioned in Engishiki and Utsubo Monogatari from the 10th century.
Overview
The color of Kuchiba was a common color of clothing worn at court in the Heian period , with the upper side being yellowish and the reverse being colored more golden-yellow to orange-colored ( 山 吹 色 , Yamabuki-iro ), similar to the Japanese golden rose . The nobility preferred colors with high saturation , which were produced by mixing with the basic color red. It is therefore not surprising that Kuchiba was mentioned frequently in the literature and etiquette books on court etiquette.
Depending on the mixed color, yellow, red or green, you get golden yellow, reddish to maple brown or ginkgo green Kuchiba, which was particularly popular in the Nara period . In this way, 48 Kuchiba colors ( 朽 葉 四 十八 色 ) can be derived. The Kuchiba colors are used exclusively for garments that were worn in autumn, using the following combinations: Kuchiba top, golden yellow inside; Upper side maple brown, inside greenish.
The brown tones ( 茶色 , Chairo , literally: "tea color") of the Edo period are derived from the color Kuchiba.
