Ball differential

The ball differential is a special form of differentials and is used almost exclusively in model making, as it wears out too quickly if the power is too high.

Layout and function

The actual differential effect is generated in that two plates are pressed against each other, between which there are balls that can roll under the preload. The force is applied centrally to the ball cage (e.g. by means of a belt , chain or toothed wheel ). If you now increase the compressive force of the plates to each other, the locking effect of the differential is greater because the friction of the balls against the plates is increased. If the compressive force is reduced, the locking effect is smaller, but at the same time less motor torque can be transmitted.

If the balls have ground a large groove in the plates over time, they should be replaced, as the formation of the grooves increases the friction and thus the locking effect. If the plates are so loose that the differential makes a screeching noise when driving, they should be turned (a little) more tightly.
