The cow tower was a remnant of the former cow castle in the Leipzig district of Alt- Lindenau , a property of the Lords of Koburg . The Kuhburger Wasser was named after the castle . The tower stood on Frankfurter Chaussee (today Jahnallee ) in the north of the former Rathswiese until 1938, where the Palmengarten was opened in 1899 .

The tower was used as a fire watch as well as a lookout point, mainly by shepherds who watched their cattle in the northern pasture . From 1528 it housed the Ratsförsterei and later an inn ("Vorderes Restaurant Palmengarten").

In 1939, the Kuhturm and other adjacent buildings were blown up in favor of the planned but never held Gutenberg Reich Exhibition. The Kuhturmstrasse and the Kuhturmallee and a gallery in Lindenau, which are close to the former location, are named after the Kuhturm .
