The Kula Gulf is a sea area in the western province of the Solomon Islands . The gulf is bounded by Kolombangara to the west , Arundel to the southeast, and New Georgia to the south and west . In the north, the Kula Gulf opens into the New Georgia Sound and in the south, the Blackett Strait connects to the Vella Gulf and the Solomon Sea.

During the Second World War , on July 6th and 7th, 1943 and on the night of 12-13 July 1943 the battle in the Kula Gulf between the US Navy and the Japanese Navy took place in the area, as a result of which the battleships USS Helena and USS Gwin were sunk on the US side and the cruiser Jintsu on the Japanese side .
