After a collaboration with a local architect failed, the building was put out to tender and the contract was ultimately awarded to Rasmus D. Nøstdal and Anders K. Skibenes on February 3, 1879. The blacksmith Didrik Guttormsen Roti also carried out important work on the house. The house was occupied in autumn 1881. It served as a bank building until 1963, from which the name Gamlebanken ( German  old bank ), which is still in use today, arises. There were further construction work. The southern part of the house was completed in 1886, the northern part in 1891. After the Second World War , the house was too small, so that extensions were made in 1949, which were dismantled during restorations around the 1990s.

It was then used as a public library . In the 1980s, the owner considered selling Sparebank 1 Vest , the old building, or tearing it down. Ultimately, it was restored and used as the administration building for the Eid Sparebanks. After the house was vacant again in 1997, it was rented to the Stiftinga Kulturhuset Gamlebanken Foundation in 1998 and has been operated as a cultural center ever since.
