history

The history of the university goes back to the overseas company Kumamoto ( 熊 本 海外 協会 ), which was founded in 1918 and established the school for Chinese language in Kumamoto Prefecture ( 熊 本 県 支那 語 学校 ) in 1938 . It has its direct origin in the Institute for East Asian Languages ( 東洋 語 学 専 門 学校 , Tōyō gogaku semmon gakkō ) founded in 1942 , which consists of three language departments (Chinese, Russian, and Malay). The opening ceremony took place the following year, on May 30, 1943 , and has been celebrated annually since then as the founding day.

After the end of the Second World War in November 1945, the institute was renamed the Linguistic Institute Kumamoto ( 熊 本 語 学 専 門 学校 ) and in 1950 under the first President Morio Takahashi in Kumamoto University ( 熊 本 短期 大学 , Kumamoto tanki daigaku ). In 1954 the campus was moved to Ōe and in the same year the Kumamoto University of Commerce ( 熊 本 商科 大学 , Kumamoto shōka daigaku ) was founded as a four-year university.

In 1966, the University of Commerce was expanded to include the Institute for Social Welfare and the following year the Faculty of Economics. By 1984 the business administration department, the international economics department and the graduate school were added.

The university emerged in 1994 from the merger between the Kumamoto Commercial University and the Kumamoto Short University. In the same year, the Foreign Languages Department and the Faculty of Social Welfare were established. In 2009 the Graduate School of Accountancy ( 会計 専 門 職 大 学院 ) was opened.
