The Art and Sports School Zurich (K&S Zurich) is a public secondary school for young talents in the field of sports and art. The school is located at Hohlstrasse 68, 8004 Zurich ( District 4 ).

K&S Zurich is a partner school recognized by Swiss Olympic and is open to students who have the necessary previous school education and a special sporting, dancing or musical talent.

The art and sports school was founded in 1989 in the Bungertwies school building, Zurich, because for some extracurricular areas it was not possible to promote talent in a meaningful and effective way. Even today it is hardly possible to promote talent in the performance area with regular lessons. With a special timetable and adapted learning options, K&S Zurich enables optimal conditions. In the first course 22 students were accepted. Around 200 students are now studying at the Zurich Art and Sports School.

aims

Education and care

The aim of the art and sports school is to use various measures to contribute to optimal support in the extracurricular area. This is achieved in particular by

  • the school offers professional care for its students.
  • the school is in regular contact with everyone involved in the training and support of the students (teachers, trainers, music teachers, parents, etc.).
  • the school offers a reduced number of hours and, if necessary, reacts flexibly to individual needs, in particular dealing generously with requests for dispensation (for training camps, competitions, concerts, performances, etc.).
  • the school coordinates school-based and extracurricular training, striving for a balance between the two.
  • the school creates a performance-friendly atmosphere through special offers.

Expectations in the school area

At K&S, value is placed on a school climate with a personal atmosphere in which everyone respects each other and in which one is tolerant, open and fair with one another. In particular, the following settings are expected:

  • The students learn independently and on their own responsibility, they carry out school work carefully and completely.
  • The students are motivated to achieve achievement and work in a targeted and concentrated manner.
  • Students treat each other with consideration and treat all other members of the school community with respect.
  • Students handle school supplies carefully.

Expectations in the sporting or musical area

With a special school model, the art and sports school offers the opportunity to combine school education and intensive extracurricular involvement. It obliges its students to train or practice purposefully and independently. Art and sports students achieve above-average sport-specific or musical performance and show a positive prognostic performance potential. As a rule, according to their age, they are at the highest level of their athletic, dance, musical or creative training. The training and career planning takes place in the interaction of all parties involved (student - trainer / music teacher / supervisor in the creative area - K&S). The athletes are usually looked after in performance centers with trainers. In the areas of music, dance and visual design, the young people go through appropriate programs to promote talented people.

Educational cornerstones

The K&S aims to provide its students with holistic education within various key qualifications in order to prepare them for the world of work and the extracurricular area. These include: promoting self-efficacy, initiating independent activity, enabling independence, demanding self-reflection, promoting the ability to work in a team, learning self-management, developing methodological and specialist skills, autonomous learning.

Students learn and develop different levels of learning autonomy by teaching work and learning techniques and strategies that are intended to facilitate learning. The strong focus on a binding, individual learning plan enables and at the same time requires a high degree of independence, a sense of responsibility and self-management.

Customization

Different paths arise due to the individual requirements of the students. K&S tries to do justice to this fact by offering inspiration and as much freedom as possible for individual work rhythms and for structuring one's own work and learning process.

Differentiation of learning

The learning programs developed by K&S are based on the mandatory teaching materials of the Canton of Zurich and formulate learning goals and work assignments within the three requirement levels I, II, III. In order to do justice to the different requirements and goals of the students, learning at the K&S is differentiated as follows:

  • Differentiation according to competencies and learning goals; a learning objective can be formulated in different complexities.
  • Temporal differentiation; not all work equally quickly
  • Differentiation of content; different level of students, partially omitting or adding whole or partial learning goals
  • Methodical differentiation: we learn in different ways

Learning goal orientation

Learning at K&S is based on competencies and learning goals, not on the tasks. This means that the completion of a learning stage takes place under certain criteria. If these are not met, the relevant subject area must be repeated and worked through.

Plan and think about learning

An essential part of learning at K&S is more or less independent planning and thinking about the learning process, the learning content and the further procedure.

Challenge 9th grade

In the 9th school year, an adaptation of the subject catalog is possible due to the specific professional desire. Students, teachers and parents jointly define a corresponding focus on individual subjects or even topics.

Community building, social learning, project teaching

In addition to imparting learning strategies, content and methods, the K&S sees its task, despite the strong emphasis on individualization, in accompanying the adolescents into responsible, young adults within a community, which is why the class council structure of the K&S as well as various cross-class events, camps and Project weeks are very important.

School system, subjects and timetable

Due to special structures, a large amount of effort tailored to individual needs is possible in the extracurricular area. The K&S is based on the mandatory curriculum of the Canton of Zurich. The lesson table is reduced by up to 12 lessons per week compared to the regular school. This at the expense of the subjects man and the environment and the arts subjects. We work with predominantly individualized instruments and plans: annual, quintals and weekly plans, weekly reviews, learning programs. There are seven multi-year classes and one class has around 26 students. There are around eight students per class in the same school year. The classes are not only mixed with different years, but also have different secondary school levels (requirement levels I, II or III). The requirement level can vary per subject.

The school is based on guided and individual lessons. The pupils are obliged to attend at least 11 teaching blocks (22 lessons) out of a total of 14 teaching blocks (28 lessons) per week, whereby attendance at the guided lessons (also called block hours) is mandatory:

  • Six guided lessons every week in the subjects: English (2 lessons), Human and Environment (4 lessons) depending on the school year, biology, history, geography, religion and culture, chemistry, physics and career choice.
  • Every week 8 individual teaching blocks (16 lessons) in the subjects: French, mathematics, geometry, German. Two teachers are always present during individualized lessons.

Classes take place daily from Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. Wednesday afternoon is free of school. The grammar school is generally only recommended after the third grade. The training in the extracurricular areas is not organized by K&S Zurich. However, each teacher supervises or coordinates at least one extracurricular area. In order to do justice to the different training conditions, several timetable variants are available. Vacation requests for sporting or artistic events are treated very benevolently. During the block times (= gray areas), the students must be fully present and no vacations are granted for regular practice units during these times. This flexibility enables the students to further develop their talent in the arts or sports fields, but it also requires a high degree of discipline from everyone.

history

K&S Neumünster was founded in 1989 by Kurt Becker and Steffi Cavelti in the Zurichberg school district. Until then, a meaningful and effective promotion of talent was not possible for some extracurricular areas. With a special timetable and adapted learning opportunities under optimal conditions, it was only possible for talented sports and art to pursue their careers in a targeted manner without neglecting the school requirements.

The Zurich Art and Sports School is the oldest school in Switzerland that systematically supports talented students in sports, music and design. The Brig sports school, founded in the same year, no longer exists.

In the first course 22 students were accepted. Initially, only talents from gymnastics, ballet and figure skating were represented. After a year in the Bungertwies school building, K&S Zurich moved to the Hirschengraben school building in Zurich in 1990. After 3 years, the K&S moved to the Neumünster school building in Zurich in 1993 and stayed there until 2011. From 2011 to 2018 the school was housed in the Münchhalde school building in Zurich.

Due to the great interest, an additional sports school called Team Sports Classes (MSP) was founded in the Glattal school district in 2002. Again it was Kurt Becker and Steffi Cavelti who started this school. In the first year of school, 40 students from the fields of hockey and football were represented. In 2003, MSP moved from a temporary facility in the AKAD building in Zurich-Oerlikon to the Halden C school building in Zurich and the Kügeliloo school building in Zurich for two years. From 2005 to 2018 the school was housed in the Im Birch school building.

The Zurich Art and Sports School was launched in summer 2010 and is a result of the merger of the two special needs schools K&S Neumünster (founded in 1989) and MSP - classes for team sports (founded in 2001). The two schools were still spatially separated. Since August 2018, the seven multi-year classes at K&S Zurich have been united under one roof in the Hohl school building in Zurich.

In 2007 the multi-year classes were introduced. Before that, the classes were separated according to age group.

In June 2019 the school celebrated its 30th anniversary.
