The Schönheide artificial ice stadium is an ice rink in the Neuheide district of the Schönheide community in the Saxon Ore Mountains region . The ice rink, nicknamed Wolfsbau , was created through successive expansions of an original outdoor artificial ice surface.
history
An outdoor swimming pool was opened at the site in 1936, the dimensions of which were suitable for ice hockey games. In the winter of 1939/40 a natural ice rink was set up for the first time, on which the first game between Schönheide and SC Astoria Berlin was played on December 31, 1939. The playing area was initially surrounded by a 1 meter high plank.
Still used as an outdoor pool in summer, a floodlight system with a total output of 16,000 watts was installed in 1951 and permanent stands were built. A rule-compliant gang was established at ice hockey games.
Even after the political change in the GDR, people continued to play on natural ice for the time being. In the mid-1990s, the municipal administration decided to close the open-air swimming pool and then build an open-air artificial ice rink at the same location, taking advantage of financial subsidies. The first season on the new facility was played in 1996/1997. In 1999 the area was covered. Due to a legal dispute with a neighboring family about noise, a partial enclosure was realized in 2000. By 2004, the sides were completely closed, which effectively created an ice rink. Furthermore, the grandstands were expanded and at the same time raised to create a better view of the field. The audience capacity increased from 1,100 to 1,500, and a VIP room was set up. In the last construction phases so far in 2006 and 2012, a sanitary complex, access to the ice rink and additional parking facilities were created in the immediate vicinity.
During the flood at the beginning of June 2013 , the nearby Filzbach flooded the hall. The water was about a meter high inside, and the cooling units were also irreparably damaged.
use
The ice rink is currently used by the regional league team, the 1b team, the youth teams, various hobby teams and for public ice skating. Since May 1, 2009, the municipality of Schönheide has been the sole operator of the ice rink.

Trivia
Due to its geographical location in a valley where cold air can accumulate, indoor temperatures of below −20 ° C in the winter months - despite the insulation of the noise barriers - are not uncommon.
As one of the few in Germany, the playing field above the hard plastic gang has a chain-link fence instead of the protective glass panes usually used. The fence is behind the gates as well as in the radii. Safety nets are installed on the long sides. The Wolfsbau is therefore also called the wire mesh palace among the guest fans .
