Kuppholmen is an island in the Byfjord in the Norwegian province of Rogaland . It belongs to the Hundvåg district of the city of Stavanger .

geography

The island is located in front of the larger island Midtholmen in the southeast and is partly only 35 meters away from it. Kuppholmen extends from south-west to north-east over 170 meters with a width of up to about 60 meters and reaches a height of up to 15 meters. The rocky archipelago is only sparsely overgrown.

history

Until 1909, Kuppholmen belonged to the farm on Langøy . Then the married couple Martin Knudsen and Else Olava acquired Midtholmen and the islands belonging to it, including Kuppholmen. A farm was built on Midtholmen, from which Kuppholmen was used as a sheep pasture. In 1957 the permanent residential use of Midtholmen ended. In 1985 Kuppholmen became the property of the city of Stavanger.

On March 16, 2002, a sailing boat crashed near Kuppholmen. In the accident, a 52-year-old fell into the water and died. As other people were suspected in the water, two helicopters searched the area at night. The accident caused a sensation due to a tragic misunderstanding. Practically at the same time, another accident occurred on an island, also called Kuppholmen , but about five kilometers further north. The emergency calls received for this second accident were inadvertently assigned to the other accident by the rescue services due to the same name and the similarity of the other circumstances, so that a rescue operation for the 53-year-old who had an accident further north was not carried out, who was found dead eight hours later .
