Kupriyanov leaves

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kuprijanow sheets or Novgorod sheets ( Russian Куприяновские листки or Новгородские листки ) are two parchment sheets in the Old Church Slavonic language in Cyrillic script . They contain text sections from the Gospels of Matthew and John for the liturgical reading on the Monday and Tuesday of Holy Week ( evangelist ).

The leaves are 34 × 26–28 cm in size, the initials are decorated with colored and gold ink in the Byzantine style. The text and decorations are very similar to the Ostromir Gospels . Their place of origin is unclear. Either they originated in the Bulgarian Empire (Ohrid School) or based on an old Bulgarian model in Novgorod or the surrounding area.

The sheets were discovered in the 19th century in the library of the St. Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod by IK Kupriyanov. Today they are in the Russian National Library in St. Petersburg , signature F.п. I. 58.
