Kurtiella pellucida is a type of mussel from the lentil mussel family(Montacutidae).

features

The housing, which has the same flap, is approximately rectangular in outline. It becomes up to 10 mm long. The length / height ratio is around 1.4 in juvenile specimens and around 1.3 in adult specimens. The housings are clearly unequal, the opisthogyric vertebrae are about a third of the length of the housing from the rear end. It is clearly elongated towards the lower front end. The anterior dorsal margin is almost straight to slightly concave; it slopes down only slightly towards the front end. The front edge appears slightly truncated by a (rounded) kink from the dorsal edge to the front edge. The transition from the front edge to the ventral edge is tightly rounded. The posterior dorsal margin is also almost straight, but it slopes slightly more steeply than the anterior dorsal margin. The transition from the ventral edge to the rear edge is not quite as abrupt as the front transition, but the rear edge also looks a bit truncated. The transition to the ventral margin is also slightly more rounded than the anterior transition. The ventral margin is curved in a flat convex manner. The inside edge of the case is smooth. The ligament lies internally in a wide depression under the vertebrae. In the right valve there are a short anterior and a posterior lateral tooth, both of which are clearly separated from the dorsal margin. In the left valve there are also two lateral teeth. They are, however, extensions of the dorsal margin and also significantly shorter than in the right valve. The divergence angle of the two lateral teeth is around 90 ° in the right valve and around 150 ° in the left valve. The area is clearly separated, but very narrow.

The whitish skin is thin and fragile. The surface is smooth with fine stripes parallel to the edge. The surface line is not indented. The pale yellow-brown to off-white Prodissoconch is 380 to 480 µm long. The Prodissoconch I is clearly demarcated and measures 120 to 130 µm in length. It has five to six narrow radial lines. The Prodissoconch II, on the other hand, shows growth lines parallel to the edge.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species has so far been detected in the Mediterranean (Sicily, Lake Alboran), southwest of Portugal. The species lives in deeper water from 165 meters to about 700 meters water depth. It occurs there in gravelly sediments consisting mostly of shell fragments. So far, the species could not be associated with any host.

Taxonomy

John Gwyn Jeffreys founded the species in 1881. It was transferred to the genus Kurtiella by Gofas & Salas in 2007 . It is accepted as a valid taxon by MolluscaBase.
