The Kutlug Timur Minaret is a minaret in the Turkmen town of Konye-Urgench , which was completed in the 14th century AD .

location

The minaret is located in Konye-Urgench, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005 and is located in northern Turkmenistan in the Daşoguz province on the border with Uzbekistan . Next to the minaret is the mausoleum of Sultan Tekish .

Building history

The construction of the minaret began at the beginning of the 11th century under the rule of the Khorezm Shah Mahmun II. After the destruction of the city in 1221 by Genghis Khan , the minaret was completed in its current form between 1321 and 1336 under Kutlug TImur . At that time, the minaret was part of the city's main mosque.

Construction

The minaret has a circular plan with a diameter of 12 meters. It tapers to the tip, where it has a diameter of two meters. The facade is decorated with patterns made of polished bricks, and two Kufi inscriptions can be seen. The top of the minaret is believed to have carried a lantern in the past, which served as a guide for caravans , but it was broken off or removed. Originally, the top of the minaret could be reached via an outbuilding and then via a staircase with 143 steps. Since the said outbuilding is no longer there, the entrance is above the ground so that the minaret can no longer be climbed.
