Kwan (martial art)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kwan ( Kor.   , Hanja   , Revised Romanization Gwan , Japanese kan ) literally means “hall”, “house”, “place” or “building”. In the Korean martial arts (KMA) it is often used to denote a martial arts school or an association of martial arts schools. In this sense, Kwan can also be translated as "association".

The head of a kwan is called Kwanjang ( 관장 , 館長 , RR Gwanjang ) in Korean . To address a Kwanjang, the particle -nim is placed in the back - Kwanjangnim , RR Gwangjangnim .

A martial arts school can also be called Dojang ( 도장 , 道場 way-place , meaning “place of Dao ”, Japanese 道場 dōjō ) in Korean . This is especially true when the corresponding martial art ends in "- do " ( German  "way", "method" ).
