Kyathos (measure of measure)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kyathos ( Greek  κύαθος , Latin cyathus , plural Kyathoi , German: "cup") was the Greek or Latin name for an ancient measure of capacity for liquids.

The kyathos had a volume of 1/6 cotyle or 1/72 chous for the Greeks and 1/12 sextarius or 1/576 amphora for the Romans . Today this corresponds to about 0.045 liters. For the Romans it was also the measure for the ladle with which the mixed wine was scooped out of the mixing vessel. The volume of the cups was measured by the capacity in cyathi . The agricultural writer Lucius Junius Moderatus Columella also uses the measure for things other than liquids, such as seeds, animal feed or medication.
