The Kydnos was next to the Pyramos and Saros one of the three great rivers in Cilicia . The mouth of the Mediterranean forms a lagoon that Rhegma is called. The lagoon served as the port of Tarsos . Originally the river flowed through the city. But after a flood, Justinian I had the river run east around the city. To the north of the city the river forms impressive waterfalls.

According to tradition at Arrian, Alexander the Great fell seriously ill after a bath in the ice-cold water of the river. In ancient times the personified deity of the river was also called Kydnos . She was often depicted on the reverse of the coins from Tarsus . In the Middle Ages the Arabs called the river Nahr al-Baradan gen . Today he is called Berdan Çayı (also Tarsus Çayı ).
