The Kyritzschule is a former school in the Martinsviertel in Darmstadt . The former school building is a listed building.

history

The original school was created through a donation of a house on Karlstrasse in Darmstadt in 1809 by the church councilor Friedrich Christoph Kyritz , after whom the school was named. This school building was demolished in 1906/07. For this purpose , a new building for a city girls' school was built at Emilstrasse 10, according to plans by August Buxbaum . This new school building originally had 20 classrooms and a gymnasium, which was housed in the bridge overarching Plönniesstrasse.

Due to the minor destruction in World War II , only the western part of the roof was damaged, the Kyritzschule was the first school in Darmstadt to be able to start operating again. In the first years after the war, pupils from different schools were taught at the Kyritz School. In 1950 some of the students were divided between the restored Diesterweg and the Schillerschule. Since then, the students at the Kyritzschule have been taught in smaller mixed classes until it was closed due to the falling number of students.

In the 1980s, the Kyritzschule was restored in accordance with the listed building standards and the interior was modernized.

The Kyritz School today

The Darmstadt Office for Green Spaces re-planned and expanded the former school yard into a playground and exercise yard. The renovation was completed in August 2011 and has been open to the public ever since. The Kyritzschule building is used by a women's center, a daycare center and a daycare center. There is also a branch of the Alice Eleonoren School in the building.
