Läntinen Pihlajasaari ( Swedish : Västra Rönnskär ) is an island belonging to Finland in the Baltic Sea , south of Helsinki in the Gulf of Finland .

The island is part of the Pihlajasaari archipelago and belongs to the Länsisaaret subarea of the Ulkosaaret district of the Finnish capital Helsinki. The sea route runs west to the port of Helsinki just a few hundred meters north. It extends in north-south direction over about 520 meters, with a width of up to 460 meters. Itäinen Pihlajasaari , to which a bridge leads, is only 50 meters to the northeast . The small island of Vadelmakupu to the east can also be reached via a bridge . To the north is the Lasimestarinletto archipelago , to the east and south-east of Pihlajakari and Pihlajaletto .

There are jetties to the north of Läntinen Pihlajasaari. Water buses belonging to Helsinki's local public transport also stop there. The Pihlajasaari restaurant is located in an old villa near the west bank of the island. The island is part of a local recreation area. It has beaches, a campsite, jogging paths and barbecue areas. There is a sauna on its south side .

In 1883 the villa, which is now used as a restaurant, was built by the architect Sjöström as Villa Hällebo , who used it himself until 1885. In 1929 it was converted into a restaurant.

Several ship accidents occurred in the area around the island. So the ship Amanda, coming from Reval , sank southeast of the island on August 28, 1890 . A shipwreck lies 50 meters southeast of the island at a depth of four meters. The only remnants of the shipwreck are 13 meters long and 6 meters wide. Cannon balls were also found. It is believed that it is the remains of an English ship that sank during the siege of Viapori in 1855 . Other information suggests a Russian ship loaded with war material that sank on July 21, 1756 . Another wreck is located south of the island.
