Noise light

A noise light

A noise traffic light is an instrument used to lower the sound level caused by people in an enclosed space. A visual display, sometimes also an audible signal, is intended to show those present that they are behaving too loudly.

functionality

A noise light looks like a traffic light. The traffic light has three colored lights in red, yellow and green.

A microphone is installed inside the traffic light . If a previously set noise level is reached, the traffic light switches from green to yellow; if an even higher level is reached, it switches to red. Some noise signals also emit an acoustic signal when the red warning level is reached.

A noise light can be used to set the decibel values at which the alarm should sound. The noise traffic light can be used individually for quiet work, group work or breaks.

Application area

Noise lights are often used in libraries, daycare centers or schools to reduce the general noise level. But: No apparatus can replace pedagogy. You always have to make behavioral agreements with the children and consistently sanction violations. When using it, it should be noted that the room should not be larger than 100 m² - beyond that, the effect is reduced. A device can also be operated with rechargeable batteries; this is not unimportant because the power cords are only about 1.60 m long and cannot be extended in daycare centers or schools. A red beep is also important because not all children can see the device. The price differences between the devices available in stores are considerable.

advantages

Noise lights have the advantage over warnings from a supervisor or a teacher that they are perceived by the people making the noise as a neutral guardian of an applicable rule. There is less aggression against the actual supervisor. Furthermore, the noise traffic light is always objective, a reminder to calm down is always given at the same noise level. Noise lights react immediately to noise and report this back immediately.

The Technical University of Dresden, Institute and Polyclinic for Social Medicine, presented “Quieter Learning” as part of a scientific study from 2005 to 2007, a guideline for noise reduction in primary school classes using the noise traffic light.

disadvantage

One problem with noise lights is that they can encourage people to intentionally set off the alarm or intentionally be too loud. This is particularly a problem if the supervisor does not have any threatenable consequences in the event of misconduct.
