Haltingen water tower

The Haltingen water tower is a steel water tower built in 1913 in Weil am Rhein, Baden-Württemberg, under the building of the Baden State Railways . The 25-meter-high tower in the Haltingen district supplied up to 50 steam-powered locomotives with water on peak days. The Haltingen railway depot maintained steam locomotives until 1969. It is located on the grounds of the Basel Bad Bf marshalling yard in the immediate vicinity of a road bridge on the B 532 . The water tower is not open to the public.

description

The water tower rests on a ring foundation made of stone blocks with a diameter of 8.50 meters. A 10 meter high steel frame composed of eight posts serves as the tower shaft and tapers from 8.20 meters to 6.40 meters in diameter. The vertical uprights are connected to horizontal and crossing struts for stiffening . A spherical water tank with a capacity of 500 cubic meters rests on the shaft . The spherical container, which was manufactured by the Dortmund company Aug. Klönne , rests on a support ring that is connected to it by 16 triangular sheets. Eight of these sheets transfer the compressive forces directly to the uprights, while the others distribute the forces equally through struts.

The water tower can be climbed via a spiral staircase located in the center of the shaft , which is fitted into a closed steel cylinder. Riser and downpipes as well as overflow pipes are also housed in the cylinder. The cylinder runs through the spherical container and leads up the stairs to the top of the reservoir, where there is a small gallery that leads around a ventilation lantern that forms the top of the tower. Two further circuits are located at the level of the spherical equator and on the support ring of the container, which are connected to one another via a stationary ladder. Movable ladders are available between the upper and middle circuit for maintenance.

Others

The railway model construction company Faller offers the Haltingen water tower as a kit consisting of 47 individual parts.
