House Dalbergstrasse 11: Löwenapotheke

The Löwenapotheke in Aschaffenburg is a half-timbered building on Stiftsplatz that was reconstructed between 1991 and 1995 .

history

The old lion pharmacy was built in the 16th century and was destroyed by US air raids in 1945. The building was built in the so-called transitional style of the central German half-timbering, which can be narrowly limited in time to the period from 1470 to 1550. Buildings of this type stand between the purely constructive half-timbering of the Middle Ages and the richly decorated buildings from around 1600. In the case of the Löwenapotheke, every layer of beams that was built in or that could be seen from the outside was part of the construction, but offered a great deal, especially through the use of curved struts harmonious, almost organic overall picture. Trusses of this type that are well preserved or not primarily damaged by later built-in windows are relatively rare, mainly due to the destruction of the Second World War. An outstanding example is the high house at Schnatterloch in Miltenberg . After years of discussions, some of which were vehemently conducted - an “ultra-modern” building was also discussed - the Löwenapotheke was reconstructed in the old style at the instigation of a citizens' initiative .
