Friedrich Lürßen (1851-1916)

Lürßen is the name of an entrepreneurial family from Bremen that has made a name for itself in shipbuilding.

Friedrich Lürßen (1851–1916) is the founder of today's company, Fr. Lürssen Werft GmbH & Co. KG. He was supported by Egbert Hagen, the stepfather of his future wife. Otto Lürßen (1880–1932), Friedrich's son, developed the shipyard into a manufacturer of racing boats and speedboats. After Otto Lürssen's death, his wife Frieda led the shipyard until 1962. Gert (1914–1991) and Fritz-Otto Lürßen (1918–1981) managed the company in the third generation. The company is run in the fourth generation from 1983 by Friedrich Lürßen and his cousin Peter Lürßen.

The family is the second richest family in Bremen with a fortune of 0.7 billion euros. The company and the owner family are involved in many areas of public life in Bremen that are geared to the common good, including in the fields of culture and science.

In 1971 Fritz-Otto Lürßen founded a tree nursery in Beverstedt-Easter village. With an area of 180 ha, the company is one of the largest and most efficient forest nurseries in Germany. It was taken over by his son Christian Lürßen.
