Lütt Matten and the White Shell is the title of a children's book by Benno Pludra . It was first published in 1963 by Kinderbuchverlag Berlin . Since then it has been published in numerous editions in the GDR and again in 2004 by Der KinderbuchVerlag .

The illustrations are by Werner Klemke .

The story of Lütt Matten ( "the little Matten" ) is told . He lives in a fishing village on the Baltic coast and is very grieved because he does not catch any fish in his self-made fish trap. The adults in the village laugh at him, only his girlfriend Mariken stands by him. Lütt Matten dreams of finding the mysterious white clam, which legend says it would bring the fish. When he drives out on the bay one night, Matten puts himself in great danger. A storm comes up and he gets stuck in the big fish traps. Lütt Matten is rescued by his father and his fishing friends. To make up for the fact that the father wasn't there for him enough, the two of them build a new trap together. The longed-for fishing will then also be successful.

In 1963 the story was produced as a 34-minute radio play on the radio of the GDR . The radio manuscript was written by Dorothea Bretzel, directed by Ingeborg Milster, narrator was Werner Röwekamp.

The story of Lütt Matten was filmed under the title Lütt Matten and the white shell by DEFA in 1964 under the direction of Herrmann Zschoche with Erik S. Klein among others . Benno Pludra wrote the script with Herrmann Zschoche.
